I don't like these kinds of charts because they have no context, no analysis, and no further breakdown of the data involved.

For example, does this chart take into account children? If we're looking at lifetime earnings, then of course women are going to lag behind men, because women are usually the care givers who stay at home.

What about looking at professions entered rather than degrees earned? A man with a BA who goes into finance and a woman with a BA who goes into teacher are of course going to have different salary projections.

I'm sure women still have more challenges in getting paid than men, but I don't like the chart. And I think "Think Progress" is again producing lazy shit to try and make vague, generalized points.

From what I've seen in my experience with marketing, finance, and engineering jobs, women make essentially the same salaries as their men coworkers. I know for a fact my woman colleague in marketing makes more than me! :)

Same here. The women in my predominantly male line of work, (and it's a straight meritocracy) do just as well in salary as their male peers. The impact of childbearing, and the heavy workload of the first year, fades out over the span of a career, but we quite properly allow anyone to stop the tenure clock for a year when the tyke is at his/her most demanding.

That makes for more nearly fair decisions, and it's a welcome reform, but it does slow by a year, or two as the case may be, the climb up the promotion ladder.

These sorts of differences in lifetime earnings are small, and they're not an injustice to women. The rule in question mitigates what used to be an injustice.

The hitch in lifetime earnings is a side effect.

I read through the referenced report and found that (if I'm reading it correctly) the data filtered out people (male and female) who were not full time earners. To be a full-time earner, someone has to work like 1700 hours per year for at least 12 of the past 15 years. That should filter out women who take significant time off their careers for child rearing. This affects the sample size because 76% of men qualify as full-time earners while only 24% of women do. This disparity alone tells you something - those women who qualify as full-time earners still probably take significant time off from their careers.

Another difference of course is women and men gravitate towards different fields. This is proven by the statistical tables at the end of the report that show the participation gender gap in hundreds of different fields. For instance, 98% of pre-school and kindergarten teachers are women. If women of all education levels go into social fields while men go into higher paying technical fields, then the overall numbers will be skewed towards men. However, the tables show a gender gap even within fields. So while the overall numbers may be insufficient evidence for a gender gap in income, the more specific data in the report still show a problem.

As a man with a BA, it saddens me to think that somewhere there's a woman with Ph.D who's also broke.
